"Bro. Calvin's Comments"

Paul Tan records a story from House & Garden magazine about an Italian New Year tradition. The streets would clear before midnight. There would be no traffic of any sort. Then when the clock struck midnight, windows would fly open. Italians would throw into the streets things they didn’t need anymore. They would throw out things that they did not like (including furniture!). They would throw out things that would bring to mind bad memories.

It is reported that this tradition is not celebrated anymore, but there is something for us to learn from it. When December 31, 2009 becomes January 1, 2010, we have an opportunity to begin anew. We have an opportunity to set aside, to lay down, to throw out those things that have held us back in our relationship with Jesus Christ, with family, with friends, and with fellow-believers. Some things are to be forgotten. Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, says, "forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 3:13b-14). Don’t just forget, move your relationships forward, working to improve them. Some things are to be laid aside. The writer of Hebrews says, "let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us." (Heb. 12:1b). Let go and leave those things that keep you from following Jesus Christ. Whether you throw them out or lay them down don’t go back to pick them up. You will not reach forward toward God’s goals in your life.

May the Lord Jesus instruct you and show you the way to go; may he give you wisdom as He watches over you. May your whole year be blessed.

Blessings,
Bro. Calvin

"In the beginning God." Genesis 1:1 NASB

Before anything was in existence, God was! God was and is and always will be first and foremost! Paul writes in Colossians that in all things He shall have preeminence. God is to have first place in our lives. As a new year begins, we often think of new beginnings, of starting things afresh and anew. It is important to recognize God and His priority in our lives. Will you resolve in this new year to give God His rightful place as Sovereign Lord of your life? Will you resolve to daily read and obey His Word, the Bible? Will you resolve to have weekly fellowship with other believers in His church?

Lord Jesus, You are my Savior, my Lord, and my King. I resolve anew to place You first in my life by obediently following Your commands.

As our thoughts move from the celebration of Christmas to the New Year, let me encourage you to ponder on your commitment to the Lord and His church. Consider making Sunday School and Worship a priority this year.

The Webster-Claiborne Association is planning an Age Group Sunday School Training event. It will be Thursday, January 21, 6:00 p.m. at First Minden. I want to encourage all our teachers to attend.

Also on January 21, I will be participating in the Louisiana Baptist Singing Ministers concert at Calvary in Alexandria. Our next concert in our area will be April 22 at Elm Grove, Bossier City.

Price Harris Ministries invites all to a Night of Praise at Calvary Baptist Church, 9333 Linwood Avenue, Shreveport, Friday, January 8 at 6:30 p.m. No admission charge but a mission offering will be taken.

Invite someone today to Sunday School and Worship!
I'll See You Sunday! MAX
