"Bro. Calvin's Comments"

"Every Christian should seek to bring industry, government, and society as a whole under the sway of the principles of righteousness, truth, and brotherly love." These words from the "2000 Baptist Faith & Message" call us to live and apply our faith in Jesus Christ to all areas of society.

In the next few weeks we will continue to be bombarded with a variety of political ads that will highlight quality traits (both good and bad) of candidates. Also on the ballot here in Louisiana are seven state constitutional amendments. Where I live in Bossier Parish I will be able to vote on a Congressional Representative, a Public Service Commissioner, a District Judge, and a School Board member. Between now and October 4, I have research to do. My research will include reading the Party Platforms of each candidate's party. I want to know what each party stands for and what their agendas are. I will read and evaluate these in Light of Scripture.

On November 4 we will vote for the highest political offices in our country-President and Vice-President of the United States. In these days we must make informed and prayerful choices; choices that are rooted in Scripture and made with a clear conscience.

It is important that we understand government's role in life, as revealed in Scripture. Romans 13:1-7 tells us a few things about government. It has its origins with God and is God's servant. It has power to judge and sentence evildoers. It is authorized to collect taxes. Because of government's origins we are to be obedient to the laws of the land. We in America are blessed because our form of government allows us to have a voice, to redress grievances and to say who can represent us.

Take time to research the candidates. Take time to research the party platforms. Discover if there are more options than Democrat or Republican. Go to the voting booth and cast your vote. But don't stop there. Contact your representatives about issues. Influence them so that "industry, government, and society as a whole" are brought "under the sway of the principles of righteousness, truth, and brotherly love."
