"Bro. Calvin's Comments"

When I buy CDs, not only do I like to listen to the music, I like to read the liner notes. Why is that? Because reading the liner notes can give you some insight into the artist’s reasons for writing that song. Or the artist may share the experiences that led to the origin of the song. For me, reading the liner notes can help me appreciate the music and the message of the music.

Sometimes the stories are humorous. Jars of Clay wrote a song during their college days entitled "Flood." In the liner notes of WoW #1s, Dan Haseltine wrote "We are not really sure what the inspiration for the song was because it was a bright sunny day with a cool breeze. Not exactly the perfect conditions to write a song about downpour and mud." Yet I have seen how this song has been helpful to another believer because it gave voice to the experience they were in at that time as well as giving hope. Sometimes the stories are drawn from Scripture. Moses asked the Lord to show His glory to him. To me, this is one of the boldest requests found in Scripture. Third Day recorded a song entitled "Show Me Your Glory." The one idea that stays in my head from this song is that Moses, when he came down from the mountain, he not only wouldn’t be the same, he wouldn’t settle for ordinary things. Sometimes songs speak of, and inspire, a desire to serve. The song "Instruments of Peace" is not only one of my favorites, it also reminds me of how graciously I am to love God and serve others.

Christian music plays an important role in our lives. It expresses our feelings. It tells our experiences. It teaches truth. It provides hope. It inspires to service. Let us worship and serve our Lord with a song in our heart, fully confident that He will win the victory.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

Bro. Calvin

We have the privilege to host the Louisiana College Chorale in Concert on Friday, April 17, as part of their Spring Tour. This selected group of singers is the main choir for the Department of Music at our state Baptist college. The 2008 Spring Tour was to Germany and the 2005 Spring Tour was to France and Spain. (Our Anna was a part of both of those tours.) The Chorale’s repertoire consists of a broad range of outstanding choral literature from all styles of music. Please be sure to mark your calendar with this date. As part of hosting this group, we will be feeding them supper and housing them that night. We will need about 12 to 15 homes to provide them lodging for the night. There is a housing sign-up list on the hallway bulletin board. Thanks for your help in making this concert possible! More details will be announced at a later date.
